What is an air source heat pump?

An environmentally friendly energy solution, air source heat pumps or air to water heat pumps, takes existing heat from the air outside your home to provide you with heating via your central heating system or underfloor heating system, and hot water.

They can also cool your home in hot weather dependent on the model you choose.

Why should I get an air source heat pump?

An air source heat pump can provide your home in East Lothian with a huge range of benefits:

  • Highly efficient at producing heating and hot water as the electricity they use is far less than the heat they deliver.

  • Lower your carbon footprint.

  • Very little maintenance.

  • Reliable with a trusted long lifespan.

  • Eligible for financial incentives.

From 2025 there will also be a ban on fossil fuel heating in new homes. Properties will need to be heated with low carbon energy systems such as air source heat pumps.

What to consider before installing an air source heat pump?

If you are thinking about getting an air source heat pump, here is what you should bear in mind:

  • Air source heat pumps are easy to install but you must have space outside your home either on the ground or wall to fit them. This must allow for a good flow of air.

  • An existing central heating system can be adapted to suit an air source heat pump OR a completely new system installed along with the air source heat pump.

  • It is best if your home is draught proofed and well insulated to prevent any heat loss and ensure maximum efficiency.
