What is an ground source heat pump?

An environmentally friendly heating solution, ground source heat pumps take natural heat from pipes beneath the ground outside your home for your heating and hot water.

Thermal transfer fluid (TTF) or brine, a combination of cool water and antifreeze flows around the loop of buried pipe. The pipe absorbs the heat from the ground into this fluid which then passes through a heat exchanger into the heat pump. This action raises the temperature of the fluid and transfers the heat to water.

Why should I get a ground source heat pump?

A ground source heat pump can provide your home in East Lothian with a vast range of benefits:

  • Highly efficient at producing heating and hot water as the electricity they use is far less than the heat they deliver.

  • Lower your carbon footprint.

  • They can provide cooling in summer.

  • Very little maintenance.

  • Reliable with a trusted long lifespan.

  • Eligible for financial incentives.

From 2025 there will also be a ban on fossil fuel heating in new homes. Properties will need to be heated with low carbon energy systems such as air source heat pumps.

What to consider before installing a ground source heat pump?

If you are thinking about getting a ground source heat pump, here is what you should bear in mind:

  • It will require some ground preparation and excavation works to be carried out.

  • You need to ensure you have the ground space to accommodate it especially if you have a sizeable home.

  • Is your property well-insulated in terms of ceilings, walls, and floors? If not, any heat produced will be lost.

  • How big a system will you need based on your maximum heat demand?

  • They work best with underfloor heating systems or larger radiators which are optimised to deliver water at lower temperatures over a wider area.

We can make upgrades to your existing heating systems to get the full benefit of your chosen ground source heat pump. We can also install a fully designed and specified heating system if required to suit both your home and specific ground source heat pump.
