What is a solar thermal hot water system?

A solar thermal hot water system takes energy from the sun via panels/tubes (solar collectors) usually installed on the roof and filled with a fluid of water and glycol.

These collectors convert the infra-red light into heat, passing it through the fluid where it is then used to warm water in a hot water cylinder or thermal store. In lower sunlight periods the water can be topped up by an immersion or conventional boiler.

Whether flat plate or evacuated tube, these systems are designed to provide you with FREE hot water in your home.

Why should I get a solar thermal hot water system?

A solar thermal hot water system can provide your home in East Lothian with a huge range of benefits:

  • Reduced energy bills as the energy comes from the sun.

  • Lower your carbon footprint as it is renewable energy.

  • Very little maintenance.

  • Reliable with a trusted long lifespan.

  • Eligible for financial incentives.

From 2025 there will also be a ban on fossil fuel heating in new homes. Properties will need to be heated with low carbon energy systems such as air source heat pumps.

What to consider before installing a solar thermal hot water system?

If you are thinking about getting a solar thermal hot water system, here is what you should bear in mind:

  • Do you have a location for the panels that receives direct sunlight for most of the day? Typically, they are installed on a south facing roof with no obstructions such as trees, or between east and west. However, if appropriate they can be ground mounted.

  • If on the roof it will need checked to ensure there is no damage prior to installation and that there is enough unobstructed space.

  • In some cases, you may need planning permission. For most homes they are classed as a permitted development,  but this does not apply to certain buildings such as those which are listed. Check with your local planning office to be sure.

  • Will your current boiler be compatible? Conventional boilers and hot water cylinders most often are, but if you have a combi boiler you will need to add a solar hot water cylinder which we can do.
