Heat pump servicing

Heat pump service in Scotland

A heat pump needs an annual service in the same way a boiler does, and for the same reasons: efficiency, reliability and keeping the manufacturer guarantee intact. We service air source heat pumps across East Lothian and Midlothian.

HEAT PUMP SERVICING

Keep your heat pump efficient

Heat pumps need a yearly service to hold their efficiency and keep the warranty valid. We provide air source heat pump service in Edinburgh and East Lothian, checking refrigerant, flow and controls so your running costs stay low.

Annual service

A full check of the outdoor unit, the refrigerant circuit, the water side and the controls, with a written report at the end.

Efficiency review

We look at how the system is set up and how it is performing, not just whether it runs. Small configuration changes often make a real difference.

Guarantee protection

Manufacturer guarantees on heat pumps generally require documented annual servicing. We keep that paperwork straight for you.

How it works

01

Book your slot

Once a year keeps the guarantee paperwork in order. We will remind you when it is due.

02

Check the unit

Outdoor unit, coil, fan, condensate and refrigerant pressures, plus the defrost cycle in operation.

03

Review the setup

Flow temperatures, weather compensation and schedules, because configuration is where the running cost is won or lost.

04

Report and adjust

We leave you a written record, and make any adjustments that will improve efficiency before we go.

What is included in an annual heat pump service

A heat pump service covers the unit, the water side and the configuration, because all three affect what the system costs you to run.

  • The outdoor unit cleaned down, with the coil and fan checked and cleared of debris
  • Condensate drainage checked and cleared, which matters particularly through a Scottish winter
  • Refrigerant circuit pressures checked for signs of loss
  • The defrost cycle observed and confirmed to be operating correctly
  • System pressure, expansion vessel and any strainers or filters checked on the water side
  • Flow and return temperatures measured against what the system is set to deliver
  • Controls, weather compensation curve and schedules reviewed and adjusted if they are working against you
  • Hot water cylinder, coil and any legionella cycle checked where one is fitted
  • A written service record for your guarantee paperwork

Where we can improve the running cost by adjusting the setup, we will do it during the visit and explain what changed.

WHY IT MATTERS

Servicing protects the running cost, not just the unit

With a boiler, a missed service mostly risks reliability. With a heat pump the bigger risk is quieter, because a system can carry on heating the house perfectly well while running considerably less efficiently than it should, and the only clue is the electricity bill.

A blocked outdoor coil, a defrost cycle running more often than necessary, or a weather compensation curve left at the installer default can each add meaningfully to what the system costs to run. None of them will stop the house being warm, so none of them announces itself.

That is why our service includes a look at the configuration rather than only the hardware. Checking that a heat pump is working is straightforward. Checking that it is working economically is the part that actually saves you money.

Heat pump servicing questions, answered

How often should a heat pump be serviced?+

Once a year. Annual servicing keeps efficiency up and is generally a condition of the manufacturer guarantee.

Does a heat pump really need servicing if nothing is wrong?+

Yes, and more so than a boiler in one respect. A heat pump can heat the house perfectly while running inefficiently, so the cost of skipping a service shows up on the electricity bill rather than as a breakdown.

What is checked during a heat pump service?+

The outdoor unit and coil, refrigerant pressures, condensate drainage, the defrost cycle, the water side, and the control settings including the weather compensation curve.

Can servicing reduce my running costs?+

Often, yes. A blocked coil or a poorly set flow temperature can add noticeably to consumption, and both are addressed during a service.

Do you service heat pumps you did not install?+

Yes. We regularly take on systems installed by other companies, including ones that were never properly commissioned.

Will servicing keep my guarantee valid?+

Generally yes. Manufacturer guarantees usually require a documented annual service, and we leave you the written record.

When is the best time of year to service a heat pump?+

Autumn is ideal, so that any issue is found before the system is working hardest through the winter.
