What is included in a solar thermal installation
Solar thermal touches the roof, the cylinder and the controls, so a complete installation covers all three.

What solar thermal does in a Scottish climate
It would be easy to oversell solar thermal this far north, so it is worth being straightforward about it. Between roughly April and September a well specified system will cover the majority of a typical household's hot water, and through the summer months it will often cover essentially all of it.
In December and January it will contribute relatively little. The value sits in the shoulder seasons and the summer, when your boiler or heat pump can be doing very little hot water work at all, and that is a meaningful share of the year.
It pairs particularly well with a heat pump. Hot water is the load a heat pump finds hardest, because it needs a higher flow temperature than space heating does, so taking that load away for half the year improves the efficiency of the whole system rather than just the cylinder.
