Underfloor heating installation in Scotland

Underfloor heating spreads warmth evenly across a whole room at a much lower flow temperature than radiators need, which makes it comfortable to live with and particularly well suited to working alongside a heat pump.

UNDERFLOOR HEATING

Wet underfloor heating

Wet underfloor heating gives even, comfortable warmth and works at low flow temperatures, which makes it ideal with a heat pump. We install underfloor heating across Scotland for new builds, extensions and renovations.

New builds and extensions

The simplest case, with pipework laid in the screed before the floor goes down and the system designed in from the start.

Renovation and retrofit

Low profile systems make underfloor viable in existing rooms where floor height is limited, without taking the ceiling down below.

Zoning and controls

Room by room control is where underfloor earns its keep. We set up zones and thermostats so you are only heating what you are using.

How it works

01

Free survey

We look at the rooms, the floor construction and the available height, and confirm what is realistic.

02

Design and heat loss

Pipe spacing and zoning come from a room by room heat loss calculation, not a standard layout.

03

Installation

Pipework laid and pressure tested before the floor goes down, with the manifold and controls fitted.

04

Commission and balance

We balance the circuits, set the controls and show you how to run it for the best comfort and cost.

What is included in an underfloor installation

Underfloor heating is a design job before it is an installation job, and getting the design right is what determines how it performs.

  • A room by room heat loss calculation, which determines pipe spacing rather than a standard layout
  • Pipe supplied and laid at the spacing the calculation calls for, not a default figure
  • Manifold, actuators and blending valve where the system runs off a higher temperature heat source
  • Pressure testing before the screed goes down, so nothing is buried untested
  • Zone wiring, thermostats and controls set up room by room
  • Integration with your existing boiler or heat pump, including any changes needed at the heat source
  • Commissioning, balancing and a handover covering how the system should be run

Underfloor responds slowly by design, so we will explain how to run it before you form habits based on radiators.

WHY IT SUITS HEAT PUMPS

Low flow temperature is the whole point

A heat pump becomes more efficient the lower the flow temperature it has to produce. Radiators sized for a gas boiler typically want water at around seventy degrees, which is exactly the condition a heat pump finds hardest and most expensive.

Underfloor heating works at far lower flow temperatures, because it spreads its output across the whole floor area rather than concentrating it in a panel on the wall. That lets a heat pump run in the range where it performs best, and the difference in running cost over a heating season is substantial.

It also changes how a house feels. Warmth arrives evenly from the floor rather than in convection currents from one wall, which usually means the room feels comfortable at a slightly lower air temperature than it would with radiators.

Underfloor heating questions, answered

Does underfloor heating work with a heat pump?+

Extremely well, and it is the ideal pairing. Underfloor runs at a much lower flow temperature than radiators, which is exactly the condition in which a heat pump is most efficient.

Can underfloor heating be retrofitted to an existing house?+

Often yes. Low profile systems are designed for renovation work where floor height is limited, and can be installed without taking down the ceiling below.

Is underfloor heating slower to warm up?+

Yes, and that is by design. It responds gradually and holds temperature steadily, so it suits being run continuously at a lower setting rather than switched on and off.

Can I have underfloor in just one room?+

Yes. Extensions, kitchens and bathrooms are common single room installations, and they can run off your existing boiler or heat pump.

What floor coverings can go over it?+

Tile and stone perform best because they conduct heat well. Engineered wood and most vinyls are fine, and carpet is possible if the tog rating is kept low.

Does it work with a gas or oil boiler?+

Yes. A blending valve reduces the flow temperature down to what underfloor needs, so it works with any heat source.

How is it controlled?+

Room by room, with a thermostat per zone and actuators on the manifold, so you are only heating the rooms you are actually using.
